WHAT IS GRAPHOLOGY?
Oxford dictionary meaning of graphology:
Study of or art of inferring character from, handwriting, system of graphic formulae, notation for graphs.
Graphology is a science based
on psychiatry and psychology in the analytical sense of the world. It is a
scientific method of analyzing and understanding a person’s personality
traits through strokes and patterns revealed in his handwriting.
Less than a century ago, people around the world equated handwriting
analysis with the pseudoscience horoscope and fortune telling etc. those
people failed to comprehend it is well documented that the science of
handwriting analysis dates back to 16th century.

Today, people have a more prudent perspective of his behavioral science and understanding its validity. There is no mystery and no magic about deciphering the graphic symbols by which we express our inner natures, our physical, mental and emotional status.

History of Graphology:
You could be forgiven for thinking that graphology was a relatively new science. In fact it has a history stretching back centuries. Six thousand years ago, the ancient Chinese were already analyzing their handwriting, assessing it for revealed personality traits.
In Europe a few thousand years in ancient Greece and Rome, handwriting analysis was carried out to high levels. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 – 322 B.C.) quoted: “Spoken words are the symbol of mental experience and written words are the symbols of spoken words.” Just as all men do not have the same speech sounds they don’t have the same writing.
The science of graphology has
for many years been a tool to increase awareness of one’s character,
personality. Three thousand years ago “Nero” stated that he had no trust for
an individual whose handwriting he thought showed him to be treacherous.
Sutonius (A.D. 69- 140) a roman historian, included handwriting
analysis in his celebrated work, Lives of the Caesars
Monks in the Middle Ages also studied how handwriting reveals charter,
“Camilio Baldi”, an Italian physician, in 1622 wrote the first book
we know of on graphology. The book was titled “How to judge the nature from
his letter”. He commended on the fact that all writers write differently and
that no one can write like another.
The word “graphology” was first used by Abby Michon of Paris. The
word is taken from the Greek ‘graph’, meaning “writing” and “olong”, meaning
“study”. “Michon” collected and studied thousands of handwriting samples,
and after many years published his system of analysis. He and his students
established the graphological society in Paris, which was active until world
war two intervened.
“ Ludwing Klages”, a well known German philosopher, established laws
and principles of graphology during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that
are still used by many graphologists today.
“Klages” basic law of expression states that each expressive bodily movement
actualizes the tensions and drives the personality. Klages also instituted
the concept of “form level”, which is judged by the general rhythm of
writing. Among his many published books are “Handwriting and character” and
“The problem of graphology”.
“Gordon Allport”, in
his studies at Harvard psychological clinic in 1930, based his research on
the assumption that-

other expressive movements of an individual are consistent with one another.
Thus, he explained a basis for evaluating personality and how it is
expressed in handwriting.
In India the history of graphology date backs in the period of
1581 where “Swami Shri Ramdas” who was Guru of Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj , in his DASBODH has described the relationship of
handwriting with the personality of the human beings in the ‘Dashak’ 19 :
‘Samas’ 1 where the whole chapter has been devoted to “Lekhan kriya”
